A music day camp for Cleveland Ohio youth offering the opportunity to work as an ensemble to prepare and present a quality performance. The first annual John Kuegeler Memorial Music Camp is a one-week jazz band day camp held the second week of June for Cleveland Ohio youth. John C. Kuegeler, a Cleveland Ohio performing musician, composer and educator was passionate about working with all age groups, especially young musicians. John was awarded a 2012 Workforce Fellowship for music from the Cuyahoga Partnership for Arts and Culture. Unfortunately for our community, John passed away suddenly in June of 2012.

Our program will bring together youth from across the city for this very special one week experience to prepare and perform jazz music compositions for the general public under the guidance of a professional music conductor. Our goal is to have students from different schools and backgrounds across the city come together for challenging and enjoyable musical fellowship and performance. The students will rehearse the material Monday through Friday, and perform the selections on Saturday for the general public. They will also have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with professional local vocalists and poets as guest artists of the camp, an experience we believe is invaluable in their growth as ensemble performers. There will be a live DVD recording of the performance that will be available for purchase order immediately following the Saturday afternoon show.

Born in New York City and raised in Cleveland Ohio, John Kuegeler enjoyed an eclectic and adventurous career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, organizer, and educator.

John graduated with a degree in music from Kent State University. At Kent State he studied trumpet as his principal instrument and developed skills on piano and percussion. Kent State provided a rich and creative musical environment where he honed his abilities through classical studies and enjoyed a consistent exploration through jazz, world music, new music, improvisation, and composition. Through his friendship with Kent State professor emeritus and composer Halim El Dabh, John discovered a talent as an organizer. He co-produced and directed El Dabh’s Opera Flies, and co-coordinated The Opera Flies Pageant. Later he co-coordinated a multi-media arts event called The Body Festival at Kent State.

John moved to Cleveland after his studies and made much of his living as a freelance musician. He has appeared with Sammy Deleon and his Orchestra, The Latin Jazz project, was auxiliary trumpet for the first production of Love Janis at the Cleveland Playhouse, and freelanced around the city.

John enjoyed success as a talented educator over his career. He worked as a teaching artist for Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio and held an artist-in-residence position with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park Environmental Education Center. He also taught with members of S.A.F.M.O.D. at the center’s River Run Arts Camp. John Kuegeler worked as a teaching artist for Roots of American music in Cleveland and utilized his skills as a percussionist, organizer, and educator in his work with the local company Rhythm Culture. He taught as a trumpet studio instructor, most recently at Fine Arts Association in Willoughby, OH. While working as a music specialist in the Montessori Schools of Flagstaff, he was inspired by the Montessori approach's individualized educational approach. While in Flagstaff, AZ he instructed jazz history at Coconino Community College.

John was a 2012 recipient of the Creative Workforce Fellowship for music composition given by the Cleveland area organization Community Partnership for Arts and Culture and was working on original work for performance when he passed away in June 2012.

In the spirit of John Clemens' passion in music education, this summer music camp aims to engage students of all backgrounds in independent thinking and team work while guiding them through an artistic process. Participants will be collaborators in the creation of a finished musical project and performance.
